Adam asked:

Can I cash my savings bonds at my local bank? Their EE Bonds so the value isn’t going to go up much at all anymore. Do I have to cash them at a National Bank?

Do you have to pay taxes on winning a savings bond?

I won a savings bond through a private school’s benefit and was wondering if I have to pay taxes on that winning if it is in the form of a bond. I have the option to get it in cash winnings, so would I have to pay taxes for that also?

I have two EE savings bonds, one is 8 yrs old and the other is 5 yrs old. I went on the savings bond website and they are not worth much right now ( interest is really low like 1.20%) Do you think I should cash them and in and buy an I bond or just wait it out. Im not financial savvy when it comes to stuff like this?

Advice on savings bonds purchased in 1990’s?

by admin ~ February 4th, 2010

gofish asked:

These bonds don’t mature(stop earning interest) until 2020- 2023. They’re earning 4%, not bad for now. I’m thinking best to hold as long as possible. I really don’t want to cash as that would bump taxable income and could mess things up with other matters to be considered. So do I hold and take the 4%, or can I do better.
Just looking for thoughts from anyone with some knowledge . Thanks!

US Savings Bonds - is interest non-taxable when used for College Tuition?

by admin ~ February 3rd, 2010

BillF asked:

In the 90’s, I purchased US Savings bonds because I was told that the interest would be tax free, if the proceeds were used to pay college tuition.

Where would I look for further information - yes daughter is in college and tuition bills are coming.

I think it made a difference if the bonds were purchased in my name or her name. They were purchased in her name.

Thanks

Ashley asked:

My husband is almost certain that his father cashed the savings bonds his grandparents bought him as a child. If so, does he have any legal action and what is a good way of approaching his grandparents about this sensitive issue?

If you notice that all other forms of financial investment have increased from 1994 to 1997 EXCEPT savings bonds, which remain the same at this time, what conclusions can you draw about the rate of return in 1997?

My 7 month old son is about to start receiving savings bonds for Christmas and Birthdays from his Godparents. Is it better to keep the savings bonds in our safety deposit box, or put them in a 529 account?
